One of my all-time favorites, partly due to reading The Naval Air War in Korea and partly due to Aces Of The Pacific . Then again, I also have a thing for the P-38 and the De Havilland Mosquito.

It's an absolutely gorgeous plane. These late-WWII prop planes are some of the most incredible designs. Bridging the gap between piston and jet, they were really starting to figure out the whole aerodynamic bit. Sleek and powerful. A real beauty.

I toured a B-17G at an air show a few years ago. As I was climbing in, I saw this stencil:
With a crew of 10, that means that the average weight for each man was 120 pounds. Granted, most of them were 18-year-old farm boys, but still. I challenge you to find ten 120-pounders today, and even if you could, I challenge you to find enough to crew the 8th Air Force.

Wow, Even I (5'9", 140lbs) would be a bit big for that crew. Guess that means I'd just have to fly a P-51.
Sacrifice.
